SPRINGDALE, Arkansas - Currently, Mitch Mustain has 16 offers including the following schools: Arkansas, Michigan State, Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Louisville, Houston, Clemson, Texas, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Duke, and Notre Dame.
HOOVER, Alabama - Junior quarterback Mitch Mustain was very impressive at the National 7 ON 7 Passing Tournament in Hoover last summer. The biggest surprise to me was that he had never started a varsity football game and yet he was polished, heady, and teffific as he led his Springdale team to a 7 on 7 victory over Shreveport Evangel in the Semi-Finals, and then he came back to lead them again to victory in the first game of the Championship Series, thus giving Evangel two losses, while giving Springdale the Championship.
This first and last game for the Championship was a very close game that could have gone either way, but Mustain took his team on a last minute drive for the winning touchdown and the victory. If Evangel had of won that game, there would be a "If" game and Evangel would have to beat Springdale twice to win the Championship.
At this point, most everyone on both teams were looking forward to meeting in a rematch in another month in Springdale for each team's first game of the 2004 football season. It was also going to be on FOX SPORTS TV.
SPRINGDALE, Arkansas - Evangel will never forget that game, because Mustain threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78-yards and two more touchdowns as Arkansas' second-ranked Springdale, upset the powerhouse Evangel team by a 38-14 score in the First Ever Annual BorderBowl Championship.
Springdale (1-0) held Evangel (0-1) to just 65 yards of total offense in the second half.
Evangel opened the game with a 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard run by Matt Kreamer, but Springdale quickly responded with a nine-play, 77-yard game-tying touchdown drive of its own that Mustain finished off with a 2-yard run.
Springdale went ahead 14-7 in the second quarter on a 48-yard touchdown by Aaron Davis, catching a pass from Mustain. But Evangel answered with a 40-yard scoring pass from Billy Barefield to Renaldo Graves that tied the game at 14 at the half.
In the second half, Evangel didn't earn a first down until 10:20 remained in the game. In the meantime, Mustain connected with junior wide receiver Andrew Norman on a 19-yard scoring play and, after an interception by junior cornerback Russ Greenlee, the Bulldogs went up 24-14 on a 22-yard field goal by Alex Tejada.
An electrifying 67-yard scoring run on a quarterback draw by Mustain broke the Evangel back when he made it 31-14. Then the Bulldogs' Zach Pruitt caused a fumble by Barefield that Chase Davis fell on in the end zone for the final score.
To say that Mitch Mustain has made a huge step into the recruiting world is an under-statement. Shortly after this game with Evangel, the Arkansas Razorbacks extended a scholarship offer to him and he now has offers from LSU, Michigan State, Texas A&M, and Georgia Tech.
"Mitch received a note from a coach today from the University of Kansas saying that they are sending their official offer letter and they and we should get it Monday," said Beck Campbell, his mom. "It is really weird, some schools send very official letters, others just call and say we are offering."
"He is getting a lot interest from Miami, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, Georgia. These are schools that have called his coach a number of times, reviewed film, and Mitch has talked to all of them. Most have said they will be here in May during spring practice. We are going to the University of Texas this weekend to meet with Coach Mack Brown. He really does not have a "favorite" right now."
As a junior, Mustain completed 139 passes of 222 trys for 2,164-yards and 20 touchdowns and a 63% pass completion rate. Arkansas has a "Mercy-Rule" and it goes into effect if one team is ahead by 30 points at halftime. Then the clock does not stop in the second half. Mustain probably only played in about half of the games, because of this rule.
His team finished 12-1 and they lost in the 5A Semi-Finals when Mitch got hurt and could not play. Mustain was so valuable to his team, they simply could not win without him.
That is why his passing stats are pretty sensational. I have selected him to my Elite Top 100 Junior All-American Team and I have have formally extended him an invitation to play in my Second Annual 2006 Coaches All-American Game Bowl Classic.
